HIGH KNOB INTERPRETIVE GUIDE

ABOUT THE GUIDE

Never visited High Knob? Use the map above or this link to find directions from your current location.

At 4,223 feet above sea level, High Knob is one of far Southwest Virginia's highest mountain summits west of I-81. The observation tower located at the mountain's peak provides an outstanding scenic view of five states...but did you know there's so much more behind what you can see from the top?

This guide has been developed by students in the Spring 2015 BIO 3510 (Natural History of the Appalachians) class at UVa-Wise to provide visitors to the Knob with an overview of not only what you can see from High Knob but also how those scenic vistas relate to Southwest Virginia's natural and human history. Along the way, we hope you'll learn something new about the science and culture of Appalachia, all while enjoying one of the mountains' most scenic viewpoints.
